The Hobart Horticultural Society was founded in 1839. The President, Captain Swanston was in the Chair. The first exhibition was held at Pavillion Point with the sections of Vegetables, Fruits, Flowers, and Cut Flowers. There was a section for non-subscribers of the Society to have an opportunity to exhibit. All subscribers and exhibitors were gentleman of the Colony. Prominent members of the Society at its inception included as above Captain Swanston, Mr. Allport, Mr. Lipscombe, Captain Forster, Messer’s Swan, Ross, Tobin and the Hon, H Elliott.
The Society’s initial patrons at the time was Sir John and Lady Franklin who awarded monetary prizes to a member that supported and promoted the Society to the Hobart Colony (among others).
Hobart Horticultural Society is honoured to have Her Excellency The Honorable Barbara Baker AC as our Patron currently. Her Excellency has opened many Shows of the Society and hosted events at Government House to mark significant occasion for the Horticultural Society.
